Glenn Cox

Born in 1969 in Plumstead, Cape Town, South Africa, Glenn Cox has developed a unique artistic style without a great deal of formal training. In high school, Glenn had a keen interest in art that lead him to studying graphic design in the late 1980s at Cape Technicon College, Cape Town.  Glenn was so keen to learn about art, he actually attended classes at a local art college without actually being registered ? he was only discovered about a year later.
After his ?art education? in 1992, he briefly lectured at the Foundation School of Art in Observatory, Cape Town.
There was some experimentation in art media before Glenn delved into painting.  Initially, he worked in ceramics and collage work before exploring his painting potential. Thereafter, Glenn began his works in brightly coloured acrylics on textured surfaces. Often with bright blue backgrounds, his paintings remind on of the magic realism of the late Rene Magritte.  Indeed, Glenn shares with Magritte a comical quality in juxtaposing subject matter.
Glenn is reluctant to discuss the subject matter of his work, preferring for his viewer to find their own meanings within his whimsical, eccentric mixed media creations.  However, a few recurring themes can be found in his work.  One finds often goats, bulls and other beasts of burden which his charismatic figures are perched upon.  There are often many symbols of travel in his work ? suitcases, ships, bicycles ? juxtaposed with images of security and stability ?houses, buildings, trees. His figures are characters inspired by his earlier experiments in collage, some actually are likenesses of the artist himself.  Their detailed, determined expressions have an eerie quality in some of his paintings.
Today, Glenn lives with his wife Sanet in the beautiful wine producing region of Paarl in the Western Cape of South Africa.
