? My current work is based upon close observation of the figure and the gestures created when shadow and light combine ? by using a combination of techniques including collage, I am also attempting to explain the subtle movement of flesh and bone under the skin, which creates the visual dynamics of form.? ?M.D.
Background
Born in 1963 in Failsworth, Manchester, UK, Mark?s art training as such was mainly self-taught. After college education and a brief spell at the Slade School of Art, he worked as a butcher for about ten years. As a butcher, he became fascinated with anatomy and the construction of form and, combined with life drawing classes, Mark developed his drawings of charcoal and his oil and chine colle paintings. While his work studies human form, there is an underlying sensuality with his subtle but dramatic use of light.
In a matter of a few years (2001 to present), Mark?s reputation as an artist has dramatically grown in the UK and his creations are sought after by patrons and galleries alike. Honored in 2003, Mark finished in first place at the Affordable Arts Fair in London, UK ? ?The Public Eye? Award.
